Thread: UK Power cut: who do you contact?

  1. #1

Exclamation UK Power cut: who do you contact?

    The National Grid site says

Your chosen electricity provider sells you energy but it's your local distribution network operator (DNO) who maintains the power lines that connect your home or business to our network.

In the event of a power cut contact your DNO to report it using the relevant number ....

Then there is a list showing the details for many areas of the UK, along with web addresses, phone numbers and more for each provider.

    http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Electricity/PowerCut/

It's well worth spending a few minutes now to find out who you'd need to contact if your power goes down because of the storm.

Only problem with that...could you access it if you were without power?

    Smart phone with web access.
Unless the power cut effects a very large area enough of the mobile phone towers should still get power and signal.

Thank goodness for smart phones / tablets et al I suppose?

I had a little chuckle when I read "our" distributor's website:

    "My power is off...

Use our postcode search tool to check if there are known problems in your area."

errrrr, no power = no pooter"

So, the best advice would surely be.........make sure your mobile gadgets are fully charged at all times lol

    But not all of them.
Only those that can act as a telephone and do not require a home wireless network - as the home network probably won't work without power to the router.

However, a standard household phone, of the wired variety, should still connect for phone calls as the power comes from the phone line itself. A cordless phone probably won't work because the base station will require power to transmit and receive.

So either look up the phone number before you need it, or use the smart phone to find the details and then use a standard phone to make the call.

Emergency numbers should be on any statement (though that will not help if you have paperless billing).

I think it would be wise to keep that number on a piece of old-fashioned analogue paper!

And will be doing just that.
