Just as a matter of interest - someone might know.
We are told to worry about fracking because it leaves voids, and causes ground movement/earthquakes.
When you pump oil out of the ground, doesn't that leave big holes as well?
In a lot of the world, they may fill with water, but what about parts of the world where there isn't much water? Most of the oil seems to come from such places.
Don't know if fracking causes voids and earthquakes. But I do know that coal mining causes tremors. We've been mining for hundreds of years, so that probably says something about the earthquake risk you can expect from fracking.
As for oil wells. Think of it more like a big sponge (made of rock) soaked in oil rather than an underground lake of oil. No void is left behind. In fact, some "spent" wells still contain 90% of their oil. It's just not economically viable to extract it. Pumping in water just helps to force the oil out.
Why don't we fill in all the old oil wells with the rubbish left over from fracking![]()

PITTSBURGH (AP) — In at least four states that have nurtured the nation's energy boom, hundreds of complaints have been made about well-water contamination from oil or gas drilling, and pollution was confirmed in a number of them, according to a review that casts doubt on industry suggestions that such problems rarely happen.
