I have raised the matter of items in the wrong category with support. I asked what happens if an item is reported. This was their reply:-

"When an item is reported for being in the incorrect category, the listing is removed and the seller receives an automated email informing them of this.

This gives the seller the opportunity to update their other live listings."

So it would appear that listings are not removed without the seller being notified. Therefore reporting an item is probably the best way of keeping listings tidy.

Would it perhaps make more sense to close the listing and send notice rather than remove it?

Yes it would make far more sense, It would be easier to relist it then in the correct catagory.

Hmmm ... perhaps a website suggestion then?

Has been suggested endlessly! Along with a few other ideas such as "fewer clicks between email invoice and paypal" and "could the website tell me when it doesn't do what I ask?" Having been irritated by both those in the last 12 hours, they are at the top of my mind but I got bored with bumping the threads on website suggestions.

This was one of the biggest irritations that buyers of items told me aboujt when I was selling. I am sure we had a site up-date a while ago to lessen the number of clicks but it seems not to be.

I've never had anyone complain - except me! I have bought a couple of items recently with invoices for combined postage and I find it very irritating.

What has this got to do with items being put in the wrong category.

Perhaps. But if you report one item per seller it gives them a chance to check their live listings to check for other items in the wrong category (as support says in their reply to me. At least, it's better than just removing an item and it does avoid the problem of questions appearing on the item.
