Streuth!!! Surely it's only potatoes and sunflower oil???

    Now, here's one for you.....

I watched the very annoying Nigella last week. She cooked chips in COLD oil, assuring the viewer that they would not be a soggy mess.

I tried it. And,believe it or not, they were very good. Start off in cold oil, and bring up to heat and bubble away until cooked.

Sounds vile, but it honestly worked.

Might have been a fluke, of course

I don't know how she gets away with half the things she does, like adding cornflour to a casserole, If i did that without mixing it with water first i would end up with a lumpy mess.
I always thought chips went soggy if you cooked them in too cold fat as well, well mine do unless you take them out and let them stand but i detest double cooked chips like they do in restauants and canteens, they taste horrible and look horrible when they are sitting half cooked sodden in grease for hours on end in there grotty aluminimum trays. yuck i am putting myself off my tea now.

Reminds me of that Joe Jackson song lyric, everything gives you cancer, not sure of the title, sorry off a bit here, but I do love Joe Jackson.

I'm sure all that pizza is going to catch up with me sooner or later, probably sooner, but I prefer to go out happy.

Best wishes for many sales to all,

    Well...

Oven chips are already sprayed/coated with sunflower oil or some other oil (for oven cooking) and deep frying them again means you're doubling the oil/fat content on the chips - not a great idea really health wise!

It's a similar kind of deal with over-heating olive oil to fry in, it changes the underlying properties of the oil and instead of being a healthy alternative it becomes an unhealthy one.

It's not a good idea to cook chips from cold oil health wise because they soak up far too much fat. It may make them taste better, but health wise it's very bad! Naughty Nigella!
