Thread: Shipping abroad is so restrictive

  1. #1

Default Shipping abroad is so restrictive

    Hi everyone

I'm trying to expand my shipping to include several countries that I considered US friendly and was really surprised about the restrictions of what can be sent to some specific countries. I ship using USPS. The shipping of items through UPS, FEDEX and DHL were crazy. 54 dollars and greater for the 3 previously mentions services. But here is what I've come across for the restrictions

Country Conditions for Mailing — Great Britain and Northern Ireland (Includes England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark, and the Isle of Man).

Australia, and a few other included

For Great Britain and No Ireland. Any postal item containing enclosures addressed to different persons at different addresses. Arms and parts of arms, except as noted under Observation #5 below. Articles, goods infringing British trademarks or copyright laws. Bullion, coins, banknotes, securities, or negotiable financial instruments of any kind. Cards decorated with mica or ground glass or similar materials unless they are placed in envelopes. Citizens Band Radios, walkie-talkies, microbugs, and radio microphones that are capable of transmitting on any frequency between 26.1 and 29.7 megacycles per second and 88 to 108 Mhz per second. Goods made in foreign prisons, except those imported for a non-commercial purpose or of a kind not manufactured in the UK. Horror comics and matrices. Jewelry, precious metals, precious or semi-precious stones. Obscene articles, prints, paintings, cards, films, videotapes, etc. Perishable infectious biological substances. Seal skins except those from an accepted source. Switchblade knives.

I can't believe that the coins or jewelry are included. Why and what can be done? The same goes for Australia and some others. I would like to open my shipping to some countries but I know that if I ship to them it could be confiscated or returned due to restrictions or a duty will be charged which as far as that one goes I have no control.

Does anyone else have this problem and what do I do to ship to our neighbors across the oceans?

Precious metals, fine jewelry, coins have restrictive international regulations. I include a statement to buyer's to please be aware of the regulations for their nation. I also familiarize myself as best I can with the restrictions, and list only to nations that are allowed to receive the item. UK shipments can usually be handled via use of Registered Mail. It is expensive.

I have purchased coins, etc internationally, and received by Registered Mail without difficulty. It is a smoother process in practice than in theory.

I guessing but were they shipped in a regular envelope? With the packaging parcel it gives limited options. I can't - how I can put it- ship lets say a Slabbed NGC or PCGS coin without all the hubbub with the paper work and or declarations. I have a Native American slave bracelet that I would want to ship with great care so in a box it goes. I see what you are saying about the researching of countries that allow these products. Well maybe I may just have to pass up the others that have these restrictions.

It took me a long time to sort this out and I'm still not sure I have it totally right, but I'm willing to share.

We state in our All About the Seller section that it is the buyer's responsibility to ensure that items can legally be shipped to their country, and that the buyer is responsible for all duties and fees. If something goes wrong, we will refund the purchase price when the merchandise is returned to us.

Gold and silver coins and banknotes can be sent to Belgium, Canada, Germany, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Singapore. Can be sent to Malaysia only by insured priority mail and only if the value is less than $50.
Silver coins and banknotes can be sent to Austria.
Base Metal coins can be sent to Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Denmark, France, India, Netherlands, Norway and Singapore.
All coins can be sold to United Kingdom, but only by Registered First Class Mail or insured Priority Mail.
Stamps cannot be sold to buyers in Italy.

Do not sell anything to Brazil. They prohibit almost everything and I decided it wasn't worth the effort.

Priority Mail International is automatically insured up to around $65. Additional insurance can be purchased to SOME countries, but not all. I haven't had time to sort it out so I don't offer our high-priced items to other countries. Someday I'll take the time to figure it out. I discovered this when I could not insure a package for $150 to South Africa. I shipped it without full insurance and it got there, but never again.

For items other than coins, banknotes and stamps, the bulk of our items are under four pounds, so we ship by International First Class whenever possible. It's MUCH cheaper than Priority Mail. If the value is under $20 we take our chances (no insurance), but we do not ship to Africa, Asia, North America or South America. There are countries in these continents where mail regularly disappears, so we decided it isn't worth taking a chance. We do ship these items to these countries (have to check their boxes): Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, India, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Portugal, Sweden, Singapore, United Kingdom and South Africa.

For the non-coin non-banknote items that have a value between $20 and $50 and weigh less than 4 pounds, we ship by Registered First Class International to every country and continent except Brazil.

I worked these out early, use the List Similar function to keep them straight, so it's not that bad now that I have it set up.

I ship about 1/3 of my items internationally

Just don't use prohibited terms on the 2976

    A coin is 'numismatic item'

Registered is worthless outside the US. Costs a lot but gives you nothing.
    My clutter

I don't play the reserve game
