I can't understand when I try to upload details of a book I am required to supply a barcode even though one does not exist. Is it a lack of knowledge of the person who set up the system? Or is it an excuse not to advertise the item? I am told that if I do not supply the barcode then the item cannot be promoted on Google. Where is the fault? And can it be corrected? Never had this problem with eBay.

How can I try an ISBN when there is none, they had not been invented when the book was published. Anyhow I have my stock in boxes and to go through them all now for ISBN numbers would be a big waste of time. EBid accepted 390 entries with no Barcodes or ISBN numbers. Why start now?

If there's no ISBN, (as there isn't for some older books), then I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've listed a few books on eBid without barcodes and all have been picked up by Google shopping, the main reason for listing barcodes.

If you're concerned, you can contact support, otherwise I wouldn't worry, as your items should be listed/picked up OK.

Didn't know this, thanks for the heads up. Wonder if they'll remove my listings from Google? Guess I'll just have to wait and see...

another option i guess would be to purchase barcodes?? not sure if this would work on books but i have done this for some of my products.

Good point, at the library where I used to work we did this when cataloging new books for scanning purposes.

My pre-1971 books do not have ISBN or SBN, so I don't include one. It means that the old books cannot be promoted so widely. That is the extent of the issue.
