Thread: thread on KT got me thinking

  1. #1

Default thread on KT got me thinking

the thread about "Help translating Polish please" got me thinking.....

has anyone else found a hobby that they do that has nothing to do what they sell but has been helpful to someone on here....

As some of you know I am a Napoleonic war nut and due to that I have read many books over the years, some of which have passages written in other languages other than English. Due to that fact I have learnt to read a smuttering/smattering (depending where you come from) of a number of languages including French, German, Polish, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.... none of which can I speak... but for once I could help someone out with a translation

Apart from translating things from / to German I have helped change a knitting pattern (I think it worked)

You've also provided, on request, various goods for YDC - does that count?

One of my interests is the English language, words and their variations. But it's almost impossible to contribute on that front without people taking offence. I'm also now an IT hobbyist after years as a professional, and I've helped people on that front rather a lot. Over the years my hobbies have included sailing, diving, flying and watching a lot of motor sport... I don't think those have been much use here so far.

And knitted me a pair of sockies, and ordered stuff from Germany for the ebid irregulars.
I have two doll information sites, one is translate ( Tressydoll.com ) into French, German and Dutch but seeing as there are no doll collectors on here that isn't much use is it? so I'm useless to anyone really, but will try and think of something.

you would have great fun with Pam in that case as she speaks Dorset and even after 7 years of living with her she still catches me out sometimes with some of the words.

Mind you we live on the Dorset, Somerset & Wiltshire borders so we get to hear a lot of different words for the same thing

I can't think of any instance of me being especially helpful on this board but in the past I've bought a mower blade (plastic.. LL stamp but extortionate by mail order), identified ships in paintings (thus increasing their value), identified medals in photographs for other family historians and, endlessly, pointed out that Scottish Law & English Law are not the same and that you can get married anywhere you like in Scotland if the minister will agree.

I've also had shopping done by people I've never met, help to describe a really odd item & a Royal Wedding item identified as being from Denmark when I had no idea except that it wasn't British.

You certainly did - all items have now been returned to the US family they originally belonged to and they are so grateful. I also passed on the knowledge you gave to me to another eBidder in a similar position.
I've helped one or two with their pictures.
