Default One for our American cousins...

Is the name Chuck a proper name or is it a diminutive for something like Charles - i.e. would someone actually be named Chuck at birth?

As far as I'm aware, Chuck is a nickname for Charles, but no doubt there's a guy whose birth certificate reads Chuck somewhere...

You know the title of this thread reminded me of the Lincoln special I watched on PBS last night; 'Our American Cousin' wasn't exactly a smash for him...

Best wishes for many sales to all,

I find Chuck fills the mouth better than Chas or Chaz. Chuck might be the more formal choice.

Dick, Rick, Ricky are usually short for Richard but I have a cousin whose legal name is Ricky. That was fine as a child but his mother said she wished she had named him Richard. I also know a guy whose birth certificate shows his name is Speedy. His mother said he came too soon so they thought he would always be Speedy. When I was introduced to him I thought it was a nickname but he wound up marrying my niece and she swears that is his legal name.

I have heard unusual nicknames and never asked if they were actually legal names--somethings are better left to the imagination!
