I have used Norton, Macafee, Spybot and Microsft Security Essentials. So far Essentials has proven to be the best. Unfortunately any program can only remain current until a hacker figures out how to get around the current program. Once a virus is found the programers can then update to combat the new version of the virus. Some prigramers are slower to react but eventually the software is updated. The worm viruses hide in various files in our computers making it difficult to find. I have found once a worm is found it usually shuts down our virus protection first. Getting the protection back on becomes the tricky bit. Normally I have to start in safe mode or go to a restore point to get the software downloaded again then it's scan after scan in admin mode, safe mode and on every user screen on that particular computer. Last time I was attacked, this method netted 11 Trojan worms all from different scans as described above.
So if we think our protection has picked up and removed a virus think again. If you see the words rogue, win32 or trojan in a scan I can guarantee we dont just have one but many hidden in our files waiting to pounce. Once infected, update your protection program and scan all modes and areas of your computer as you possibly can.

I must point out that the program I suggested does not stay resident in the PC so you would have to have a proper anti virus program running for contiual protection. I tend to use the Vipre Premium program which includes a firewall. I also use Malwarebytes. In both cases they are paid for software and work excellently together. As people say they are all only as good as their last update, but I feel if you pay for something you get a better service.

Thats absolutely correct because quite often with a freebie you can get a viral infection.

Thank you all for your helpful input.
I found avast briliant until recently
Over the last week or so I have managed to find 4 trojans by using Superantispyware. This is a very good program for removing difficult bugs.
I have changed to AVG for Virus protection.
I tried to download Microsoft security essentials initially as it had good reviews. However for some reason I cannot install it. there is something on my registry that needs to be removed evidently and I don't feel qualied enough to start seleting stuff there (Unless i am sure it's malware ) So rather than make things more complicated I gave MSE a pass.

I am pretty good at most PC stuff usually and with patience I know it wil be OK in the end.
What a lovely lot you all are. This is THE best forum in the WWW ((((((((Hugs)))))))))
