If you want to process card payments personally (e.g. via telephone) then you need a Merchant Account with a bank.

If you just want to allow customers to be able to pay you via a card but don't want the hassle of a merchant account, then an account with the likes of Google, NoChex, PayPal, and the like will meet your needs.

Yes, If you are new to online selling, then I think you are best to go with Paypal, its free, its easy to use, and more people use it than any other payment method.

I would also say to go with Paypal for this.

It is possible to set up a merchant account with paypal, you use a virtual terminal to enter your customers details and take the payment, however they do reserve hold a percentage ( anything from 10 to 50 % dependant on the trade you are in) of the money taken for a period of either 90 or 120 days, which can affect your cash flow considerably, in case of charge backs.

It's great that you've found a system you like - albeit one that's not available in the UK - but calling PayPal a "scam" when it's a large-scale, popular processor that's integrated into this site is uncalled for - some of use use, and rely upon, the system; including the owners of this site.

For this seller, being new to the 'game'....PayPal and Google Checkout is their best bet by a mile.
