A train company bidding to run services is promising to slash the prices for people travelling from Lancashire to London.

The Grand Central Railway is bidding to run the line from the capital to Blackpool going through the stations at Preston and Kirkham and Wesham.

If it were successful, Blackpool would see the first direct trains from London since May 2003. Grand Central’s bid to operate the service coincides with the ending of competition restrictions on the West Coast Main Line and the expiry of the Virgin West Coast franchise in 2012.

Director Charles Belcher, who previously ran the West Coast Mainline operation for Virgin, said: “We are already running services from Sunderland and parts of West Yorkshire to London and can offer an off-peak return ticket bought on the day from Sunderland to London for just £79 with a peak ticket from Bradford for £120.

But what they don't say is, if you book 12 weeks in advance you could get the same journey for a lot less

Quite agree - and you are treated worse than cattle (at least there are regualtions on how many cattle can be crammed into a wagon). Trains are a last resort as far as I am concerned.

All mainline trains should pull Euro Tunnel type wagons also and carrly long distance lorries. Generate revenue, good for the environment and take some load off the roads.
