Angry i am seriously starting to hate the post office

i sent a record to a customer via media mail a couple of days ago. now mind you , this person also lives in florida so it did not have to go very far. the record arrived cracked and the box is mangled. now i had to refund the member the money which is not a bid deal really but now i have a customer that is not happy and out a record he has been looking for at a great price. i did not put insurance on it i for such a small amount and most customers wont pay for it. i bet if i complain about it i can get my money back but what a waste of time and energy. i just wish people who worked there were more considerate and careful with our packages. to top it all off they put post office tape on it that says received in damaged condition. can you believe that!!! as if i smashed the package up and then dropped it off at the post office. i guess i need to get a fragile and do not bend stamp. i know its partly my fault for lack of insurance but come on. why should i have to put do not bend or fragile on a package? they all should be treated with respect.
thanks for letting me rant here i feel much better already

    Tell me about it!

You mark a package 'Fragile' and some idiot is likely to play football with it!

    That's soccer in the states!

Here is a good rule of thumb. Is the package secure enough to withstand a box with a cast iron pot thrown on it?

This was actually witnessed by a friend who mailed the cast iron pot. It was thrown by the clerk into a box a few feet away so would smash anything under it!

They sure don't use separate bins for fragile items.

You know, the insurance is really more hassle than it's worth. I think for really high priced items it's helpful but when the customer finds out what they have to do on their end it makes them even unhappier. Low cost item(I don't know if your's was) or even unhappier customer-I'll take the choice of losing the lower cost item.

That doesn't make it any less disappointing to either of you though. Even though the customer is upset, I'm sure that they really appreciate your refund and great customer service.

As for the post office itself------don't even get me started!!!

Guess I've been very lucky over the years of selling on-line. Have shipped thousands of packages and so far have only had 4 breaks. And I used to ship a lot of glassware. As for insurance, I use it on certain things. Thankfully I've not had to use the new online process of making an insurance claim with the USPS. Wonder if it's any easier than it was before to file a claim?

Since alot of my items are very fragile I have learned how to pack them. Most items are double boxed, and bubble wrapped to the extreme. I do put insurance on any item over 150.00 and have only had one break so far. It was insured and that went well too. I ship regular mail and have sent carved eggs as far as Australia without a problem. I got some lovely fragile stickers from kimbo's store, also do not bend....great stuff.

Its amazing that all around the world, the postal workers seem to be sooooooo similiar! Do they have one training facility for everyone?

I agree about insurance. Few things get lost/broken and since it is the seller's job to get the package to buyer safely, why make the buyer pay extra? I don't require insurance for less expensive items but assure my buyers they are fully covered and I will refund immediately if lost. If items are worth over $20 I will also refund immediately, but I take out insurance/confirmation myself and call it a bonus for buying from me. Best $1.80 a seller can buy!

For those afraid of a Paypal case that they can not provide proof of shipping on, the case is closed in 2 seconds if seller refunds to the buyer. People often forget there are two ways to close a case. Proof of shipping essentually tells the buyer of a lost package, tough luck, I sent it and have proof, and now you have to take the loss yourself.
