Default Excel Question (for excel tech)

On our main server we have excel file that we all have to go into now and then

I need to update it but once i have made the changes and try to save it, it keeps telling me its in use in another programme, have checked everyone's computor but no one else in the office is in it, i saved it as another name worked on it then saved, worked but when i went into it today the new one said the same, then i done it again and save it in another name, now that one is playing up

I have c&p it and am using that at the mo

I have tried to delete the other files but wont let me as it still saying it is being used in another programme

Now the original file, I can drag it onto my desk top, do the changes then drag it back and it will over write the original

but that was only a test, we can't in reality do that

I opened a new folder to drag the files into, but it wont let me

so I am stuck with files i cant amend, cant delete, cant move, all because they are saying it's opened in another programme

does anyone know how i can find out where they are open,

That has happened me a couple of times but I was usually able to save it under a different name, delete the original, then rename the copy to the original name. If that didn't work, then turning the computer off and on again usually sorted it out!

Have you tried opening it and saving it as a template? At least then it would be a slightly different type of document and when you open the template you would have the choice of saving the edited version as a template or a regular doc.

    Thankyou Treasure

I tried so many different things, saving to another name, saving onto my desktop, draging and droping it, I was confussed the tech guy said it was a corrupt file, but that made no sense to me as i was able to change it when i dragged it onto my desk top then dragged it back and overwrite the original, if the file was corrupt I would'nt be able to do that

happy now tho, seems it was the main server that needed a swift kick, or a reboot

    all is fine now

Seems to be a common problem and one I have experienced in the past. Never found a cause or a solution and MS deny there is a problem.

This page offers some tips: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...a-21a6d5575d94

A Google with throw plenty of sufferers though but no, not that I have found, total solution.
