Default Tech Advice Needed Please - Comp REfuses To Restart

Hi, I have come across a problem when I tried to log on on my laptop this morning I got this message, after navigating through a screen with startup options:
    ################################################## ##########
"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage.

    Unmountable_ BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen restart the computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.

If this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If the problem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as Caching or Shadowing.

If you need to use a safe mode to remove or disable components restart the computer. Press F8 to select advanced startup options and then select safe mode
    ################################################## ##########

I have re-started several times (had to, to read this message) in both last known safe option andm start normally. The computer just returns to the startup options after this page has shown.

As far as I know there are no new software installations and I have been using the same hardware for about 2 years now.

The cmputer has been playing up for 2-3 days, when I click on the firefox button to launch it was very slow reacting; but I put this down to unpredictable and at times nearly extinct reception from Vodafone mobile internet.

    Can anyone help please?

I am okay using the computer on a daily basis but when something like this happens I am clueless.

    Thanks in advance.

If you've got the Windows installation disk it might be worth running that and choosing the "R - Repair" option when prompted.

It's not a guaranteed fix but it seems to have worked for at least some other people who had the same problem (Google "Unmountable_ BOOT_VOLUME" for further details).

Hold off the software change. Remove all external hardware inc mouse and keyboard - see if it boots. If it doesn't, it is probably your graphics card, although I had a problem like this and it was a TV card. Try another graphics card, from another computer, if one is available.

Another thing that causes this is a loose or tarnished memory card, remove and replace the memory cards too. It could be one of the memory cards have blown, if you have more than one, try taking one out - then the other.

Although,as it is a laptop - it could be the drive has gone - these are easy to replace.

Any chance it is a virus, I had lots of shutdowns when I had a bad virus contamination a few years ago?

Thanks folks, I will give that magnets tip a try first and see what happens.

Delta: It could very possibly be a virus, but I do a regular scan with AVG (paid for) and nothing showed up. But one thing I have learnt is that none of the virus programmes are 100% efficient. Still that is one thing to sort when I get control of the laptop back.

Oh oh. Reason I asked is that mine acted same way when I got a virus a few years back. Just get going, shut down, start again, 10 minutes, shut down. MSN called it a virus contamination and I ran their Auto Care program several times to clean it out. I had Norton and it went right thru that (have AVG now too and trust them more). Not sure what it was, virus, worm, glitsch whatever. I have/had XP which made it susceptable to this particular thing someone told me.

Good luck, tell us what happens.
