I have used paypal for about 9 years, and continue to offer this choice of payment. I have never had any trouble with them in all these years.

From what I have read and heard (although it might not be true) it is mainly those who P/pal think suspicious who have payments put on hold... also e**y/p-pal have their own rules re witholding payments

Paypal started to hold money to protect customers - so customer bought something, Paypal holds onto their money for 21 days or until the buyer leaves positive feedback. It is to prevent Scammers. Unfortunately like everything, when people commit crimes or fraud the rest of society pay for it in some way or another.

I didn't particularly like it, I am not sure that their policy would go down well if it was introduced over all banking establishments but hey ho. Actually Nochex hold £180 of my money at all times for exactly the same reason, it is neither here nor there for me BUT i have read about a few people who have needed that held cash for buying new stock - and when Paypal have been able to hold hundreds of pounds it really has put them in trouble so I can understand why it would upset those that it affected.

It is temporary though, as soon as Paypal are happy that you are a genuine seller selling a proper and safe product then they will release your money. If you sell anything dodgy then you may find that your money is returned to the customer.

It happens to all new sellers over there - not sure about here or if they would do it with business account holders. It happened with hundreds of quids worth of my money - as it is all my money is trapped in Paypal and they won't even let me pay anything with it at the moment because i have not been able to verify my bank details - all thanks to the Natwest being complete utter incompetents and messing up the account details.

thanks for the info bits.... I joined the darkside more years than I like to think about and long before these rules were thought about, so I have never been affected by them (could also have something to do with the price of my items as well) the rule didn't come into effect until I left the darkside

Yep i think it must be a very recent thing - and really it could damage a very new and tiny business where cashflow is vital and ready money is low on the ground.

I know a few people were told to message their buyers and ask them for feedback as this was a sure way of having the money released and this is where i find it unfair - so many do not leave feedback and many would not want to badger their buyers. 21 days is an awful long time and really Paypal can see the positive feedback from other sellers coming in so after say 30 sales i don't see why it is needed - i think it stopped after I'd sold 50 items.

As anyone can imaging, if you were to sell 50 items with a buying cost of £30, not to mention postage and profit, with just 10% feedback, that is a massive amount that Paypal are witholding - and enough to end a business before it has started unless it is a well established business.

Just another way i think to stop small business entering onto the darkside as you call it

AND i will add, none of the people who dod complain about it, nor myself actually saw any information to explain this, I am sure it may have been there in the fine print BUT i think for something like that, there needs to be more than fine print to be honest.

When I list on there I get a big announcement as I am about to complete the listing, telling me that the customer's payment might be put on hold for up to 3 weeks.

That isn't small print...I read it easily.

I also make sure I have money set aside to cover me for any money that is put on hold.

That kind of limits what I can sell on there as I don't have several thousands stashed away...maybe £50 or so

I take it you've never used "buy now, pay later" then?
