I think most banks have said they plan to get rid of them shortly. Not many people use them now.
I write a cheque for a person every month just because he don't like Standing Orders. Just cannot get it through his thick head how much easier it would be for him.
My posts only state my own opinions, unless I've stolen them from someone else
I haven't accepted cheques as payment for a long time. I have probably written a couple of cheques out myself in the last year for people who don't accept other forms of payment.
Our company pays by cheque to all the suppliers, i'm slowly getting them to move over to online banking.
The costs for bussiness banking is a total con

DD....0.32p per
Standing Orders 0.66p per
Cheques 0.58p per

With as many transactions we make a month
it's costing us a bomb in bank fees
Life is serious but taking it too seriously robs you of
happiness, fun and productivity
I think the only thing I use cheques for now is sending birthday money when I can't be bothered to choose and send a present.
The banks want to do away with cheques, even if customers like them, so withdrawing the cheque guarantee facility is a way of preventing them being used in most retail outlets, though many already decline to accept cheques.
They are a convenient method of making a payment to people, I refuse to jump on the online banking with it's attendent fraud risks, so I presume this will mean a visit to my bank to make a payment to someone, from whom I shall have to obtain their banking details, and I suspect queue for ages at the solitary till window that is open, whilst hordes of eager staff use the opportunity to try and sell me the latest banking product!

Cheques are still widely used and accepted here - paid in five given to me by customers today. There is no need for a guarantee card as people would be in serious trouble and risk losing their bank account if a cheque bounces.
I mostly use cheques to pay small traders - painter - handyman - plumber. They don't have the machines to take debit cards.
