Calculating top sellers is not an easy feat, and top searches is also troublesome.. You have to look at it from a programming standpoint.
Calculating or compiling top selling products and top searches is server resource-intensive - (It's called Data Mining) - To keep the site stable and reliable for everyone, they would have to invest in a separate server cluster just for top selling products and searches- This all has to be stored to a database, and then calculated on a regular basis.
Likewise with a request I made something like a year ago (I wanted to get an API that we can connect to to create data mining robots , similar to hammertap ) - the resources and storage that would be required for these features would require they set up a server cluster dedicated to this , alone.. Now if they charged fees like FeeBay did, by now, they could surely afford it. I'm sure it is a feature that will become available *eventually* as the site grows further. However, at the present time, I do not believe it is feasible. As the API is built , and matures over time, I'd imagine they will add features to the API (I am betting it will be XML/SOAP request driven) , they will eventually make certain data available as to the auction listings, past and present .. Since they would not store detailed data on listings for much more than 90 days (I can't see how they could, considering how much data there IS..) , in order to come up with long term trends and top selling items, it would be necessary to have an API for other sites to fetch and store long term data trends.. I would imagine they would at first start with having a single server or small cluster dedicated to handling the API requests, which would be run on a "mirror" of the live website's database. then I'm sure enterprising individuals like myself could build data mining websites to fetch the available data (and they have to make sure that sensitive data is not accessible) ..
In any case, I am betting these are some features that are probably on the "to do" list , but a low priority item at the moment..
Unless of course, you'd rather start paying fees like FleaBay charges.... in which case, you'd do just as well to move back to FleabagBay...
I'd love to see a data mining API come out, as well as hot selling ITEMS (not top selling sellers.. - to be brutally honest, I'd say a majority of people don't really care anyhow.. Buyers come looking for bargains... not specific sellers.. except those buyers that come at invitation of a seller or already have them saved as a favorite seller.. )
Search stats would be great as well - including searches for items that dont return results - more data mining that would give hard working sellers a little bit of a boost..
As for the argument above showing that searches are different between the Big A and SneezeBay ... In a general sense, they ARE the same - all dealing with computers and laptops - I note that the A*z*n is very item specific , while the *bay items are *category* specific - that's pretty much just comparing apples and oranges - In any case, I'd be willing to bet you can use the top results from any one of those sites and get nearly the same results as to what category is selling well here...
I also agree that these results are somewhat biased.. I'd much rather have data mining capabilities to do my own research before having a top selling items list .. hot categories, now, that would be nice and probably quite simple to update on a once a day basis (what category generates most sales.. )
