I said yes, as it would be nice to see what has bids on them

Yes..................across site. Seeing bids makes things more interesting. I get bored when I don't see bids. I like to see bidding wars in particular. This is an auction site, and bids should show.

And it would be nice too if you didn't have to click on an item to find out there is a reserve

Much of the advice given to newbies on here centres on having a BIN price so that it shows up on google. So, if most of the items on here have a BIN price, I cannot see the importance of the bids being shown. Apart from YDC auctions, is there much bidding on here?
Out of all of my sales on here, only two have received bids. All the others have been BIN.

There are numerous selling sites with no bidding

The auction format has been demonstrated to be better than a set price format

You can't have an auction without bidding

I wish eBid would live up to the name

I voted 'NO' because I don't want eBid to introduce anything that interferes with sales or discourages people from bidding.

The last time eBid bowed to pressure and showed bids, the rate of growth for both new members and sales decreased.

There is no longer the bidding frenzy that there was in feebay's heyday. If I ever bid on anything on feebay now, I use their system of showing bids to actively discourage other people from bidding by placing multiple bids to increase the bid count without increasing the opening price. It works! About 80% of the time people bypass the item that I've placed multiple bids on.

    Agreed.

Also the other day I spotted on e*** someone had placed a much higher bid for an item in an auction than the seller was prepared to accept for the same item in their shop on buy it now. At other times I have seen buyers bid more than they could buy the same book for on the big river. This is not uncommon at all. Maybe I'm not cut out for the cut and thrust of selling because I couldn't mark that down to the buyers "own stupid fault" and would feel very, very guilty! I'm always pleased that on eBid my auction bid starting price and my BIN price are showing side by side!

We are always advised to make our bid price what we would be willing to accept - thus the gap between that and the BIN price is usually quite small - so not much space for bidding wars there - thus I have yet to see the advantage of showing bids in that case.

Lol - I've been trying to stand back this time around as everybody has different view points and opinions on this but feel I must answer (you know I can never keep quiet ! )

The last time the bids were shown was at the start of a major recession so I don't think that showing the bids can be entirely blamed for a drop in numbers. There must have been a lot of other contributing factors at that time for any drop in trade.

I quite agree that there isn't the bidding frenzy that there was in the other sides hayday but you have to question why that is ?! IMO what finally put paid to that was when they started hiding the identity of who was bidding. I'm sure they did that on purpose to discourage bidding in their new business plan.

On eBid we have a completely different system where you can see who you are bidding against and where members cannot have multiple identities. I can see no reason why eBid cannot emulate the success of the bidding haydays on the other side but to do that you have to be able to see the bids. Otherwise you might as well turn this into a BIN site and do away with bidding altogether.

The question is how are we going to be able to start lowering our starting bid price when bidding remains in the shadows? It's a vicious circle and until eBid start to promote the bidding side of the site then it just isn't going to happen.
