Thread: R.I.P. Bill McLaren

    Default R.I.P. Bill McLaren

    R.I.P. "the voice of rugby".

A genius sports commentator (possibly the best of all time) who managed to capture so eloquently the true drama of sport within the moment - the exhilaration of victory and success tempered against the crushing blow of defeat and failure.

Rugby isn't my number one sport but I remember Bill McLaren's commentary making the hair on the back of my neck stand up even when my team wasn't winning - it was that compelling!

Here's a short BBC tribute to this great man:

I am not familiar with Mr. McLaren but enjoyed the tribute, some of his phrases made me laugh. A good sports commentator is an asset, and a great one is a treasure.

Um, what happened to that guys shorts?

Just the result of some rough play I think but it almost gave new meaning to the term 'rugby tackle'
