Basically it says that due to "continuous bad weather" parents should decide what is best and simply call school should you think it too dangerous. Or simply go to school later in the day.

Obviously I must have not been the only one to compalin

Well here in the frosty, snowy, icy midwest it is required that everyone make their path safe for letter carriers, children going to school, walkers etc. This means clearing the pathways promptly AND putting rock salt (or even table salt), sand or kitty litter down. No excuses, no arguing, it is done or you get no mail and get a city citation and fine. If someone falls you get sued. Very few people do not clear the path and make it safe.

Likewise if we do not dig the garbage bins out, we don't get trash pickup.

If everyone did that, you would not have to worry about dangerous walking conditions for anyone. City/town should make sure this is done.

It's been stated on the national news here that you shouldn't use cat litter as it absorbs the water and then freezes making it even more dangerous !

Lots of people do clear their pathways and pavements outside their house but not a lot of good if the council won't grit the side roads so the delivery people can't reach us anyway !!!

From what I have just been reading on my local papers site, a lot of the schools are closed in Wrexham solely because it is unsafe for pupils and staff to travel to and from.

Glad to hear your school exhibits some commonsense.

Be safe. If cheap cat litter freezes in place, better than slick ice. We carry bags of it in car to put under car wheels if we get stuck. Rock salt is better but if it is not available, you use what you can.

But even rock salt will not melt ice when the temp is very very cold. That sounds like what happened in UK. Unless you have chemical mixes on hand, you can do nothing about the slick ice until temps rise. Happens to us too, and the trucks just stop salting and go back to yards to get other mixes if they have them.
