In the case we are discussing, I also think prison would be OTT, I think community service would be more appropriate.
OK in this case we would seem to agree then?

The guy was drunk, has admitted he was wrong and I'm pretty sure will never make the same mistake again...ever!

Not me. Satan has already got a host of agency demons booked to pitchfork my rear end for all eternity.

I also agree with that Sarah. I think community service doing something to help our wounded troops would be very apt and would certainly sober him up and make him think about what he has done.

They should put him in stocks and submerse him in urine up to his chest for 24 hrs.

Being a US citizen, you might not think I should be commenting here but it IS interesting to thoughtfully consider what to do about this guy. I have to say I'm sure he's on the VERY UNLUCKY end of people his age who get blind drunk. Some get away with it almost unscathed. He did get caught and justice, being the public remedy for aggrieved citizens, demands some kind of payment. How about ordering him to learn about the lives of a certain number of those who are memorialized where he urinated. Study their birth and death dates, where they grew up, maybe visit those places, study the battles in which they died if that's how they died, look at their pictures, talk to their survivors or descendants. If this information isn't easily available, make him DIG for it and contribute his findings to a library or genealogy center.

What really bothered me about the incident is thinking about how people feel so free to kill brain cells. I have been drunk in my time but no more. We really do need contributions from all people, not self-hating waste.

A 50 year old lorry driver mowing down a family - I would agree with you.

A 19 year old student away from home and perhaps out of his face for the first time who pees in a cemetery - maybe cut him some slack.
That's a bald statement - 50 year old lorry drivers sometimes have been known to suffer heart attacks, they may have fought for their country in their youth, the might be upright folks who just had the bad luck to have a tragedy like you describe happen to them.

I suffer from foot in mouth too. . . but at least I'd try and qualify what I said.

And then turn him the other way up for the next 24.

I would presume hypn0toad is refering to one or both of these cases and not making a general statement.

If you read my quote again it starts with "It depends on the crime" and was in reply to Astral's point about people who are under the influence of drink using it as an excuse for their behaviour.

The example you give of a 50 year old lorry driver suffering a heart attack would be nothing other than a tragic accident not a crime but it has nothing to do with what I wrote.
