I think they would be a grandma by the time they finished it.

There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into these dolls. There was on lady on E*ay who I just had to complement. This doll looked so real.
There was no way I could afford it but I had to email her and tell her how fabulous it looked. She must have spent a huge amount of time on it to get the colouring so perfect.

i'm sure somebody on this forum has mentioned owning one - babs i think.
i think from a tv programme i watched a while ago, some owners do like to treat them as a real baby- walks in fancy prams etc.

Yes - guilty as charged - this is the one I own

For myself I don't like dolls of any description - nor children for that matter. I have more dolls in the house now than I had as a child, and I only have 4 - well 6 if you include the 2 sindy dolls, although I haven't made anything for them to model for ages.

I have them because I make doll clothes (along with other things) and use the dolls to model the clothes that I make. That was the reason for buying my reborn - so she can earn her keep. Yes, she is kept in a moses basket, but not for vanity sake, its to keep her safe as it took me nearly a year to find a doll that I that I thought was pretty and at nearly £280 she wasn't cheap.

Oh and just for a giggle - we went visiting some friends of ours (Glenys has a 'thing' for dolls) but we took the doll all dressed up, and in the moses basket with us when we went visiting, We both proudly marched down the front steps, rang the doorbell. Oh Glenys was over the moon - she'd forgotten that I'd had a hysterectomy and couldn't have children even if I wanted to and thought for a few minutes that we had a real baby, that was very quiet. She couldn't understand why Ray & myself were chuckling merrily.

Aw thank you - I think so too. She had a lot of competition on the bidding too so I guess a lot of people thought the same. She spends all her 'free time' in a baby 'all in one' in her moses basket, completely covered in a blanket to help keep her clean and to prevent any fading from sunlight. The only time she gets handled is when I've made outfits her size and she models them.

The dolls I have are different sizes - going upwards - baby born, baby annabelle, chou chou, and finishing at Beth at 24 inch - great for modelling though.

I'm sure Ray thought I was going broody when I bought them all in, but knowing I'd 'had the op' didn't cause him to worry too much. Luckily, he is very tolerant and patient with everything I do.

I can appreciate the undoubted skill that goes into their creation, but it does strike me as a bit odd.

I liked dolls when I was little, but they don't do anything for me now. I do find the realistic ones a wee bit creepy, but we all have different things that trigger those reactions. I can see that for somebody who feels there is a baby-sized gap in their lives, it's a very practical solution that harms no-one.

They might not be cheap, but compared with twenty years of clothing, educating, feeding etc they probably look like a good deal. And they'll never want to borrow your car.

Ok - was talking to a friend in Nottingham about these - apparently a friend of hers has 3 of them in her bedroom.........

    So.....

Do candid camera still operate? or another similar show?

I wanna put a remote control speaker under one of these

I think you've summed it up there in one. A friend of ours collects dolls and when we played the 'baby' trick on her, she cuddled the doll as if it was a real baby. By her own nature and in her defense, she is naturally maternal and loves children and babies so that could be part of it. Lifelike baby dolls for the collector obviously hold a fascination, which is why they sell so well - but, as you say, they never want to borrow the car, need new computers, money for the mobile, or any of the designer labels - although, I know a lot of reborn dolls do get clothed in designer labels - aswell as, in some cases over the top frills, ribbons and flounces.

For my own part - I can't see any point in being 'affectionate' to something inanimate that doesn't give affection back. For me, all the dolls have a practical purpose and are the same as my sewing machine & threads - tools for my hobby.
