The trouble of bookmarking is you would only see one group. I was a member of 4 groups and could go to social groups and see all 4 and if anyone had posted since I had been there then go to have a look in the ones that were active.
The last person to post in the group I am in, was in December; I wrote a short message in March to say hello, but nothing since... so I tend to think that maybe the groups need to be highlighted more.
To answer the question though, yes, it would be better back the way they were.
