They just burn themselves out when everyone it comes into contact with has acquired immunity (either through catching it, or vaccination). If there aren't any susceptible hosts, there can be no disease.

Plus, flu is constantly mutating, it gets less pathogenic and less virulent as well as it adapts to its hosts.

Yep, certainly did for the plague. 1666 was a bit of a bitch of a year for living in London.

One good thing though - they didnt have tv, radio and the net so probably didnt realise scale of things. I think some of us these days may not die from the "plague" but are half worried to death and made ill, anxiety etc by the fear of it

Regular flu kills more people EVERY year.

(and shouldnt go to GP with that either)

The problem with this one is that the general public are under the impression (because of hysterical media headlines) that if they catch this, they and/or their children, are going to die. Unfortunately that has been true in a few cases, as it is with almost any disease, but we don't normally have screaming headlines announcing the death toll of ordinary seasonal colds and flu.

Just popped in quickly to give a first hand perspective to the speculation.

We have our Tamiflu after my O/H panicked and phoned our GP surgery. The GP immediately faxed an authorisation to our local Tamiflu distribution point with the name of our designated collector. The person we had designated had to take photo ID with her to collect the two doses. We were specifically told not to go out, not to collect in person and not to go to the GP surgery.

This is now day four for me and I am feeling much better. I have run out of hankies though. (Yuk!) We think we got this from a delivery bloke who came to our home. He said he wasn't feeling well after we'd already opened the door to him.
