I think that readers outnumber collectors. I want readers to be able to browse book categories that they like, and not miss all my modern 1st eds because they're somewhere else. If you want a first ed, you will find that noted in the description of every one of my books that qualifies. I don't want my listings to suffer because other sellers are less efficient or poor communicators. Why should I be penalised because other people don't do their job properly? Sorry, I know that's selfish, but that's my take on it.

I agree with Kimbo and think that 1 st edition would be better as an extra field - like new/used. a tick box.. "is this a first edition?"

That works for me, anything to indicate the 1st ed. would be good

The trouble with searching for first editions - without some sort of category or indicator to search by - is that even the efficient sellers haven't managed to agree on using
    F/E
    1st
    first ed
    first edition
    1st/1st
    1st state
    1st/1st/1st
    true first

making it a bit hard to 'just search' for first editions.

A selection of tick boxes for books, like the "item specifics" elsewhere, would be useful. Then people could narrow their searches by first, hardback, dust jacket etc. These are, of course, the sort of searches one would have on a specialist book site. Which ebid isn't. Depends on whether they're interested in going that route or not.
