yes I remember them - along with the silver 3d coin, 6d coin, the old brass penny and ha'penny, shilling, 2 shilling, crown, and then it was notes for the 10 shilling, and pounds. I've got some here in the house. They were around before 1963 though, and ceased to be valid currency when decimal coinage came in - although there was a changeover period where both forms of coinage were accepted.
Oh I forgot the farthing which was about the same size as the current 1p coin. The farthing was done away with during the 1960's I believe - and the reason? because the coin size was too small.

2 halfpence = 1 penny (1d)
3 pence = 1 thruppence (3d)
there was a silver 3d as well known as a joey or thuppany bit
6 pence = 1 sixpence (a 'tanner') (6d)
12 pence = 1 shilling (a bob) (1s)
2 shillings = 1 florin ( a 'two bob bit') (2s)
2 shillings and 6 pence = 1 half crown (2s 6d)
5 shillings = 1 Crown (5s)
