How do I measure a horse's saddle?

Googled it and I'm more confused then ever. Seems most on thiefbay measure from front to rear but THATS not correct the best answer I could find was measure between the "D" rings Which I think I found but cant be sure.

You can measure how the saddle fits the horse, or how the saddle fits the rider, with different sets of numbers generated each way. From your question, it sounds like you are trying to measure the seat size of an English saddle.

Near the front of an English saddle there are two nails, one on each side; if you were sitting in the saddle, the nails would be in front of each thigh. All English saddles have them, and many manufacturers attach a D ring here. The measuring tape runs from this nailhead, across the seat and to the center of the seat back. A typical English adult saddle will measure 17" from the nail to the center back of the saddle.

Hi thanks for this I measured from the studs to the centre back 17" BUT the studs are about 1" from the D rings which would make it 18" now which is it?

PS How much is it worth? It seems to be padded in Good condition with Leather and Suede? (Purple)

Can you see any markings on the saddle that give an indication of maker, or place of manufacture? Some typical places to look would be just about that nail, under the flap on either side; also under the 3 straps on each side of the saddle.

Any photographic clues you could post......hint hint.......

The purple panel at the front of the saddle, where the knee would go if your feet were in the stirrups......is it flat beneath that, or is there a built-up wedge there? The synthetic material provides grippiness to prevent the rider from slipping forward, which makes me think saddle lends itself to eventing.

The cut of the side flaps and the look of the seat give me the sense that this is an all-around saddle that could be used in all three phases of eventing (cross-country, show jumping and dressage) although the bright color would be unusual in the dressage ring, to say the least.

Do we have any Pony Clubbers here on the KT?
