I understand it's a bum deal for the genuine enthusiast/collector (and for sellers!) but I can also understand why online auction/ecommerce sites would take such action.

No, it doesn't show any hypocrisy at all. It just goes to show that google adverts pick up on keywords in posts and show adverts that tie in with those keywords.

The sale of all knives, swords and machetes is now not permitted on eBid.

If you don't believe me run a search on "kitchen knife" and see how many results are returned.
