Default SL - The 'up-to-speed' posting.

If you're new to the 'Second-Life Project' for eBid Members, have a read of this.

...and if you haven't helped to support the Project yet by advertising your eBid Stores or Listings with us, it's not too late. There is still a small number of spaces available.

The 'Virtual World' of 'Second-Life', it's a massive online world, with thousands of users, where anything that can be done in 'Real Life (RL)' may be carried out. You can build, buy land, shop, socialise at Clubs, Dance, run businesses, compete in role-play games, enter contests and win virtual money L$ (Linden Dollars) etc. I cannot emphasise enough, that 'SL' is not a game, but an experience. There are no single 'goals' and no winners, although there are games within SL.

It is free to have a basic account and to download the SL Viewer.
The original concept for the Project, was simply to get the eBid name 'out there’ in SL anyway we could. A small group of us met, and discussed ideas, and quickly set up an SL eBid Group, recruiting SL members who were unaware of eBid's existence.
We concluded that we should earn virtual money 'in-world' and buy land to build a virtual Shopping Mall on. (We could have bought L$ with RL Money, but decided that it would be better to spend time earning it in SL, so that we could also see how everything worked, and gain as good a knowledge as we could of building etc.). Once we had saved enough, and after a lengthy search for suitable land, we bought three land parcels (later adding a forth), and set about building the two story Manderley Shopping Mall. We had decided to make advert panels for eBidders available for a small cost to cover monthly land tier fees, land purchase costs etc. Blank advert panels were added, which have sold steadily since we made them available. When a Resident 'clicks' on the advert, which carries the eBidders logo etc. it gives out a direct link to the eBidders Store/Listings page, gives out a small text file (known as a Notecard) with as many details as the Advertiser requires, and also a Landmark so they can return to the Mall again easily. SL Users may click the following link to teleport to the Mall http://slurl.com/secondlife/Narugo/234/223/76

Early on, we realised that the real challenge was to get Residents into the area and into the Mall specifically to see your adverts. We discussed a variety of options to ensure this happened. These included running regular Saturday contests with L$ Prizes on the roof of the Mall, (which was set up with a small stage for live performances, and dance floors etc.), and possibly acquiring other land parcels adjacent to the Mall and building things that were popular in SL on them.

The Opening night was a great success, with SL Celebrity Elvis Tribute Act, 'BubbaC John' performing live on the roof. He has a great following for all his shows, and subsequently many attended.
Over the following months, more land was acquired and a 'Garden' designed, for ‘romance and relaxation’. These gardens are popular throughout SL and always increase traffic. Another smaller Mall, 'Haven' was built specialising in SL gadgets (again popular), with the second floor dedicated to 'Corrine's Fashions' - (Quality Clothes for Ladies, at Sensible Prices). The current phase of the Project, is a 'Wedding & Reception area' for SL. Peggy, Hiya and myself attended a Wedding in SL and felt it would be a good way to gain more Traffic to the Mall, in the form of Wedding Guests. This phase is almost nearing completion, and we will be able to carry out SL Weddings, Handfastings and other 'joining services' customised to suit, as well as supplying beautiful Wedding Dresses (made by Hiya), Invitations, Certificates, Cakes, rings etc. A variety of Wedding Packages will be available, including full rental of the private Honeymoon Suite, etc.

Our Group is continually fine tuning the area to keep it interesting and increase Traffic, and we have more projects in mind. We have achieved a significant number of new members signing up to eBid. It is a SL area that we are all very proud of, and I would like to thank Peggy, Wendy, Hiya, (and the others that didn't want to be mentioned! IYKWIM LOL) for their great help so far. The Project would not be where it was, if it wasn't for you!

If you would like to join our SL eBid Group, or need any help at all with getting started in SL, please let one of us know. We are a friendly Group and it's always good to meet up in SL.

    Best wishes, Simon.

    Hi Drummer,

Welcome to the thread! Good to know that you find SL enjoyable too.

The Project Group has an exciting update! For sometime there's been rumours about, that we were planning to make available for rental, some luxury homes close to Manderlay Mall. I am proud to announce that the old garden area, now has a semi-detatched residence, with upper and lower floors, menu-driven changable decor, and some superb 'bay' windows! The rental price for these are very reasonable, with 75 spare 'prims' allowed for each home. As there are only two available, we'll be renting out on a 'first-come, first-served' basis. The Group feels that having permanent residents in the immediate area, will drive traffic up, and thus gain more exposure for your eBid adverts in the Mall. (If you are interested in one of these, or are interested in promoting your eBid listings/shops etc. please see Ignatius Lytton, Zarin Nightfire or Hiya Honi 'in-world').

There are still a small number of adverts available for rental in the Mall, for those interested in promoting their listings.

If anyone has any questions, please ask.

    All the best, Simon.

    Hello,

I don't seem to get here much anymore but I wanted to share my appreciation for Simon and Wendy and their rescue of my loss.

Because of the real life expenses involved I am having to give up the land in second life where I had my church but because of the kindness of Simon and Wendy they have moved it to the Manderley Shopping Mall area. I am thankful for their offer and it does give a place to sit either inside or in the yard and visit or just have a little quiet time while watching the swans swim around.

Don't forget to about the fishing available in the area and they also offer apartments for rent. You can check all these other things out while you are checking the eBid adverts in the Manderley Mall and the spy ware and clothing at Haven. Wow almost like going to Walmart --- most of what you need in one area.

    Thanks again Simon and Wendy.

I gave it a try, and that is an odd place. Maybe it is my age, but I got the feeling I was trespassing in a younger persons domain

What is the average age in that place?

One point when I first went in, I did a search for ebid and it brought up a list of names, then I did a search for the Manderley Mall, I think it was called and nothing came up. So I signed out and came back here reading through the posts, and then I noticed the post above, where it is called the Manderley Shopping Mall, I did the search for that and it found me the link so I could have a look.
Just thought if you could add that to your own pages that come up, for those that want to search and find.

It was getting late and I had to leave, but what I did see looked good, but for the fact I seemed to walk through a few walls, that I could not do in other areas, and there is no seats.

I may try get back in and explore a little more.

It would be interesting to know how successful this has been as a marketing tool up to this point?

One last question though, what the hell is that blue thing with the circle in the middle, where it gives you a list to choose out in the garden?

Hi Peggy.. Just wanted to thank you on behalf of Wendy and I, for your lovely comments. The Church you built, looks lovely in it's new location, and will be a definite enhancement to the area. In fact Wendy and I commented that there has been a sudden increase in traffic, since the Churches move.

We have a few more ideas for redevelopment of the area, which will keep interest in the Mall up, and when time allows, are intending to reinstate the Fishing Contests.

Hi, Thanks for your posting, and welcome to the thread. I'm sure some of the other regulars will jump in with info, but in the meantime, here goes ...

Not sure of average age of SL, but average age of our team is 54

One point when I first went in, I did a search for ebid and it brought up a list of names, then I did a search for the Manderley Mall, I think it was called and nothing came up.

Yes, the list of names are all the members in the eBid Group (not just the Committee). This number grows almost daily, which we find is a great indication of growing interest in the eBid Second-Life Project.

Not sure why nothing came up when you searched for 'Manderley Mall'. Lindens have recently changed the search function slightly, so 'Mature' would have to be ticked, which most people have switched as default. Also, make sure you're searching in the 'All' or 'Places' sections, and not 'Groups' or 'People'. It's definitely there, because Lindens charge me for putting it in the 'Search'.

So I signed out and came back here reading through the posts, and then I noticed the post above, where it is called the Manderley Shopping Mall, I did the search for that and it found me the link so I could have a look.

This is the SLURL. Clicking it will take you to the Mall.

LOL. A few of us did that. Most of us never left . Seriously, many of the first eBid Second-Life Project Members have stayed 'in-world' to run their own 'side-projects' and interests. There is much to do if you are creative, and most of us run alternative L$-based businesses in SL. Say 'Hi' to Georgia who spends a lot of time in the Mall answering the Quiz questions for the "eBid Quiz Team". Georgia is another regular eBidder, and we're very grateful to her for all the hours she puts in.

It would be interesting to know how successful this has been as a marketing tool up to this point?

A number of us noticed increased sales, and many of the 'big forum names' renew their adverts. Each advert is fitted with a 'click counter' to monitor interest in the advert. By far the most encouraging point, was the sudden increase in eBid Membership shortly after the Project was initiated. Many 'in-worlders' who had been previously unaware of eBid, asked us questions about it, joined the SL eBid Group, and became eBidders themselves. Our Group has a policy of continually modifying the area of land in and around the Mall, in order to make it interesting, and generate new traffic.

One last question though, what the hell is that blue thing with the circle in the middle, where it gives you a list to choose out in the garden?
Hmmm not sure. But it sounds suspiciously like 'Blue Barski's' Photographic Studio. Blue is a friend of the Groups, and has set up her Studio there, in order that users can take their own photos, and offer a L$ donation if they wish. The Studio has generated new traffic to the area too.

Please let one of us know if you have any further questions. The core of the Group consists of Ignatius Lytton, Hiya Honi, Zarin Nightfire, and of course Cepas Frog (Peggy) who doesn't have much time for SL at the moment, and officially stepped-down, but I'm sure she would be more than happy to help with any questions.
