Thread: Capodimonte?

  1. #1

    Default Capodimonte?

My dad bought me these two figures, sometime before 1977,
I know he was told they were both Capodimonte & I'd like to find out more about them.

This one stands about 8½ inches high, & has always been known as "Charlie"

I cannot see a makers mark but there is a number on the base 1609

This one doesn't seem to have any maker's marks or numbers
    he's about 5 inches high.

    Fake japanese?

    Erm yeah ok

    For starters

Unmarked pieces means aboslutely nothing, and does not indicate "japanese fakes".

Back to the subjects at hand, im not sure they are capodimonte but at first thought, especially with the mention of the figure having a number marked underneath, i thought, they look german origin.

Based on this i had a look through a antiques trade website which gives details of most auction house sales around the country within the past couple of years. Couldnt really place the man figure, but the monkey hit a note. There are quite a few "monkey bands" ornaments from the 19th century which are german, and quite a few are made by meissen i believe, although there were other german companies making them.

Id seriously consider taking these down to an auction house or dealer and have a word with them, as i know complete "monkey bands" can fetch some good money, not sure about individual pieces though.

Im not saying these are the genuine meissen figures which will be worths mega-money, BUt i would say they are defitnely not Japanese, possibly a later german reproduction.......but it dosnt hurt to find out.

Heres a site i found selling individual pieces
    http://www.thebestthings.com/antiques/monkeysm.htm

    and another with a band

    Thanks Manstomar,
It's only curiosity on my part, (unless any of them are worth enough for me to retire on ) I certainly won't be parting with them, their sentimental value is too high.

    No problem Gothicina

although i stand to be slightly corrected on this, apparently capodimonte DID infact produce a "monkey band", which i didnt know I could only find one "capodimonte monkey band " which sold in 2001, however, there is no picture.......
