thjat ashould get you started,
Oh, Kedo, I've been talking about merging china and pottery FOREVER! It's a totally artificial divide (how many people really know the difference between china, porcelain, pottery, stoneware, earthenware?) and many manufacturers make more than one quality.
I agree about Kitchenalia too - it is pretty well distinct from Kitchenware. One is for using, the other for putting on the dresser.
QC, I don't like the datelined as well as the manufacturers - where do you put a vintage piece of Wedgwood? (and how do you define it?). Perhaps dateline subcats within manufacturers? And you have subdivided by china/pottery - Wedgwood make both, so do Doulton, Worcester and Denby, to name but a few.

QC,
I don't see why you want separate
the cats for China & Porcelain from Pottery
that just duplicates the existing problems & leads to more confusion.
Surely China Porcelain & Pottery should
all be together, with just sub cats for manufacturers.
Your way Minton Royal Doulton Royal Worcester for instance each have two categories, surely each one only needs one?
Then everything Minton (Doulton, Worcester ect) would be found in one place, be it pottery china OR porcelain. That makes it easier for seller's & buyers.
If I list a pin dish that belonged to my mum, I can read the backstamp say for instance Royal Worcester, I neither know or care if it is pottery or porcelain I just want to sell it & for buyers to find it easily.
If it's bought by a collector they will know from the photos ect what it is, but a casual buyer is more likely to buy because it's pretty & they know the name Royal Worcester.
I hadn't thought about Glass being included as well.
I agree with Kedo about Collectables/Kitchenalia

I would prefer to have China & Porcelain pulled out of the Collectibles category and be made a top level category.
I have no objection to having Pottery included making it China & Porcelain & Pottery but IN A TOP LEVEL CATEGORY.

Well it is odd and artificial as you say. All the items we're trying to classify are basically made of mud which is heated to make it hard (unless you include glass, which is basically sand and is heated to make it soft). The most obvious ways to split them up are either by form/function (ie. cup, plate, bowl, figure etc.) or by manufacturer. Chemical composition, as it is now, is just historical/convention. I think you're right, one category divided by manufacturer is by far the simplest solution.
I do think it would work well, at least I can't forsee any negative consequences. It would reduce the number of categories at the same time as it solved a lot of the problems (eg. as outlined by Gothicina above). Reduction in the number of categories would also probably mean better populated categories which can't be a bad thing. The other benefit would be that once implemented it wouldn't need to be changed again except for the addition of rarer makes perhaps. Does that make sense? I'm in danger of writing an essay here.

My preference is for Glass to NOT be included.

Glass is a difficult one. It is not a ceramic, of course (it's a supercooled liquid for those who care) but where should it go? It belongs in both collectables and home cats so another top level cat for glass? It would be smaller but it would still be larger than some that already exist
