Unhappy Up grading to xp advice needed

    Hello

My friend has windows me and wants to upgrade to windows xp been the pc shop and they said he needs to up grade memory (£30.00) and which will be sufficient to run xp home addition only (£70.00 incl licence etc.)

Shop has said that he can install it himself or they'll install it for £49.50.

Is it complicated to install you?
(I thought you just popped the disc in and run to install)
    Is the price about right?

Neither of us knows anything about computers so would be grateful for any advice

You should be able to get the memory on line cheaper, and it just slots in, I don't think putting the XP upgrade in should be difficult either and you could get that online cheaper, can't you find someone to help who lives by you.

    If you go here. http://www.crucial.com

They will scan the computer and tell you exactly what ram you need, then you can buy it from them or go look on some auction sites, Oh yes like this one ))

Installing XP is easy, can't remeber what the RAm requirments are but I would have 512K or more if you can. Also the new OP sytem Vista is due shortly so even though that is going to cost a bit more you may conside it worthwhile to wait a bit, and skip to the new one. Depends on your machine specs though.

A friend has built a computer for me with xp on.My old one has ME on it.I have them side by side on my desk at the moment so I can transfer files etc.I have just clicked on this link on both computers,it has come up with exactly the same message for both.Including the same motherboard id! It is telling me I have 512mb total,I know the new one has more than that.(Can't rememember at mo how to check.)
I can "improve" my system if I buy from them though

did you use the system scanner, and you don't have to buy from them, just get a scan done then buy elswhere.
we have scanned two computers and its told us exactly what is in and what we can upgrade to and what to get.
Other than that yank the side off, take the ram out and have a look at it . I cant remember where to look either other that that. There is a system sommat or other someplace

Sorry Linda, the point I was making was the scan on each computer showed exactly the same result.Meaning it isn't a genuine scan.
"Guaranteed compatible memory upgrades for your ISTART 1359 Motherboard.
We were not able to determine the manufacturer and/or model of your PC, but we were able to complete our scan with information from your motherboard. Your system configuration
    512MB Total"
Would this be similar to your own "scan" result?

    Thumbs up

Thank you all folks, for your help.

I have passed all your info onto my friend this morning, and glad to report that 512mb was fitted this afternoon (so simple just clicked into place) and looking at buying xp from ebid over the weekend.
