Thread: Can anyone identify this vase?

Default Can anyone identify this vase?

    Hello,
can anyone shed any light on the origins of this glass vase?
it appears to be moulded with scenes of a windmill and cottage.
Its about 8" high and 5" wide at the top and the base is about 3.5" across. It belonged to my Grandmother who passed away in 1979 thats all I know about it.

    cheers

    Jock

It is "pressed glass"... I've never seen that one (I'm no expert) - relatively unusual though.

Pressed glass is not highly valued, but I think it is set to improve in value.

It (could) be a Pressed Glass Celery vase (possibly) Sowerby It has a very unusual pattern !, I like it.

The height of these vases varies, depending on if the celery vase is flat or footed, usually between 8 to 15 inches tall, see one below.

    Hello honeyant,
i have just had an email reply from a bloke in Canada who has one the same as mine. He says like you pressed glass celery vase. circa 1875-1890 . He cant provide a maker but believes it to be an English maker.

More than likely it is a Sowerby piece then.

The first recorded glass factory of Sowerby's was the New Stourbridge Glassworks (1807 - 1852) although it is generally believed that the family were making glass in Gateshead as early as 1760.

In 1852 the firm expanded, moving to a new site in East Street. (Tyneside) The site covered 5.5 acres and by the 1880s employed around 1000 men, producing 150 tons of finished pieces per week and was reputed to be the largest pressed glass works in the world!!
