Talking More Plants wanted in the Garden section

Hi im getting my garden started up and I love French Lavender. Im after different plants for my front garden as im doing a massive overhaul to make it look better. Im hoping eventually to get rid of the boring grass I have out front. I have loads of Horse hair *A nasty weed" the roots go all the way to Austraila so is hard to get rid of. Anyone got any ideas about the horse hair. Apart from that I require more plants NOT Trees or bushes. But plants similar to Rose bushes and lavender and ferns.

your horsehair problem, these tend to grow in areas of poor soil quality, 2 ways ive found of getting rid of them, is with a small clump, spray with vinegar, for some reason they hate it!, the plants wither, go brown and voila! gone, enrich the soil with manure and or compost and you should be rid of them as they like poor soil quality.

2nd way is to knock over plants and spray with a high nitrogen spray, cover with a layer of cardboard then bury under a few inches of again compost or manure to feed up the soil.

    hope that helps

Thanks traceymole il try the vinegar effect. We have a severe garden full of stones and clay. I clear the stones out and then few days later theyve returned with revenge. When i dig the so called clay soil lots of stones come up seems the builders tried to extend the house and forgot to add more walls.

What you need to get rid of Mare's tail as it's sometimes called is Glyphosphate (eg Round-Up).

Spray foliage and the poison will be taken down to the roots. My neighbour got rid of it that way but you have to do repeat spraying to completely iradicate it.
