Thread: MP3 - USB problem. Any ideas?

  1. #1

Unhappy MP3 - USB problem. Any ideas?

I've got an MP3/voice recorder/data storage thing which has its own plug for USB connection. When I plug it into my computer, the computer chimes to say it's seen the new device, starts to recognise it then chimes as though it's been unplugged. It will continue to do this all the time whilst the device is connected - meanwhile I can't load anything to it.
I've got six USB ports to choose from & it's the same in all of them.
In my other computer & my son's computer everything's fine.
The only difference I can see is that my main computer's USB ports are USB2.0 but this device is supposed to be USB2 compliant.
    Any help gladly appreciated.

Can't help I'm afraid, But you have reminded me that I have not re-fitted my Voicepad since I got my new comp. I hope it still works.
That will be by job for the day. LOL between that and Photobucket, see you all in about 6 weeks.

Check the main power connector on the motherboard.

My USB modem used to do the same thing, pulled the power connector out and it was slightly charred on 2 pins. Cleaned them up, made sure all pins were a tight fit and re-booted. Been fine ever since.

Check the connection going into the device itself. I have a similar problem with the data cable for my mobile. If I put it in at a sort of angle it works fine otherwise it just chimes at me.

USB2 shouldn't be a problem as they are backwards compatible.

    Forgot to mention.

USB hub, USB Scanner & USB printer all work fine, as does the USB camera.
    It's just this one item

are you using a powered hub ? if the device is trying to pull more than 500ma then it will have a prob. All usb devices are not suppose to pull more than 500ma and if they do then it will not be enough and will not load the device.

If you have a poered hub make sure the power supply in plugged into it and switched on !

Even with the hub removed, plugging the device directly into the socket, it's doing the same thing.

Yet other USB devices work fine on this machine & the MP3 thingy works fine on other machines.

If you go to device manager and right click on the usb devices, choose the power tab and you can see how much power is being used. Have it plugged in lol

How is the mp3 powered up by the way ?

Oooh, never knew that. The Mp3 runs off one AAA battery.

Had to keep clicking refresh but eventually got a display. The device uses 100mA
and my other devices are using...
    Mouse 50
    scanner 0
    printer 2
