can only play games in 16 colours - help!

ops: my computer crashed so i reverted in safe mode to previous configuration - seems to have worked ok except for one thing - from having a choice of from 16 colours to truecolour 32 bit in my display settings, i now get a choice of 16 colours and um thats it. as i like to play games which use at least 256 and usually truecolour, and suggestions on how to get it back - apart from anything else it makes my beautiful skeleton wallpaper look extremely washed out and more skeletal than i like any ideas? probably something quite simple, and no i didnt do a back up disk anytime recently- kept meaning to... re-installign hte graphics card drivers could help....
