Default Do you have an indoor or outdoor cat?

I was given a kitten last month. Hes a Cornish Rex / British Blue cross. Hes only 5 months old and I've read that they can go out at 6 months of age, but I worry that he might get stolen, run over or killed by foxes.

I think 6 months is too young for a kitten to venture ouside. Hes quite happy indoors with all of his toys and scratching post.

If he's happy I'd just leave him be just now ... especially with all this wind and rain!
maybe when the weather improves he may be more interested and follow you out the door
I found in general males wander futher than females but they are all different.

I rather have them older than 6 months.

I normally let them go at their own pace. Maybe once in a while I will pick them up and walk outside.

When they are newer to going outside, I supervise them and make sure that they have me as a protector. But during this time, it is short periods of time outside of 15-30 minutes and then I take them back in.

When my cats get use to going outside, they are allowed out without supervision when I am home, but when I have to leave for work, I prefer them inside. There is NO night time outside. Too many coyotes and owls that will eat them.

Right now, I have 2 that are almost 4 years old that haven't been outside yet and they want out.

My problem is that when I found them, they were feral with their mama, Dottie.
It took 6 months and during the winter for Dottie to get friendly. But during this time, Dottie wouldn't let me touch her kittens. It's taken a LONG time, but Little Girl I can finally touch, pet and go to her without her running from me. On the other hand, Alfalfa still has the feralness in him. Only at certain times I am allowed to pet him.

I am hoping that this year, Little Girl will be allowed outside with my others.

A Rex shouldn't be out in cold weather - too little coat.

I'm tempted to get another kitten to keep mine company when I'm out. A bengal would be nice or a maine coon. I like birmans too.

A Bengal? You don't want to leave one of those alone in the house! Birmans are nice placid cats in my experience. I know nothing about Maine Coons.

Maine Coons are one of my favs. Also known as the gentle giant. It is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, originally form the state of Maine.

I'm guessing that a Maine Coon would be expensive in UK - I've never even touched one!

However, as I've never bought a cat in my life, prices are something I know little about -our first and only kitten was "free to a good home" and the rest have come from Cats Protection... apart, that is, the one we looked after for a friend while she was living in the tropics for two years.
