I have a lot of items which have come to the end of their listing time and I want to relist them but it appears I can only do that by making them Buy it now. Is this the case or am I missing something?

You should be able to relist exactly as you had them before.
If you don't like the relist, you can edit it by adding a starting bid. If your relist has Fixed Price ticked under Buy Now, then just click Fixed Price to enable you to create a starting bi.
