(Un) Common Frog

Does anyone have any frogspawn in their ponds? I have none and our neighbours have none either.

Either the Common Frog is becoming scarce or the weather is too cold.

People on my local group reporting rather a lot of the stuff so don't panic yet.

I'm afraid this leads me to think that my little pool is simply not big enough to tempt frogs to spawn. Like yours Purple Stevie, mine is preformed, but it is only small owing to the number of trees and shrubs in the garden which would cause a problem with leaves. It was originally situated in a very sunny area but had to be moved owing to the infestation of mozzie larvae YUK!!!

I don't think the size is the problem. Ours is very small and we have had frogspawn for the last 30 years at least and this year is no exception. Have you ever had any frogspawn? How old is your pond? It can take frogs a year or two to find a new pond especially as frog numbers have been declining over the last 30 years or more.

Yes, I am not the most patient of people My little pond was only constructed around twelve months ago so maybe I should just leave well alone and hope it is inhabited next year.

ps - How small is 'small' Tony? Mine is only approx 3' x 2.6"

Ours is about 4' x 3'. So not much bigger.
Another thought. If you know someone who has a pond with frogspawn, ask them to let you have a bit. A lot of frogs will return to the pond where they came from as tadpoles. Not every one, obviously, otherwise a new pond would never be populated

All the pertinent sites say this shouldn't be done in case disease is transmitted from pond to pond. Also.....no one around here has any frogspawn either. Maybe too cold in the Midlands
