price variations for multiples of item

I would like to offer different prices for different quantities ordered of the same item--lower prices for more items purchased. It seems this could be done using product variations (where for books there are variations for dust jacket, 1st edition, etc.) by adding another variation for quantity. If there was simply a way to type "quantity" in a variation in the selection box, it would seem to work. Can this be done? If not is there another solution other than adding a different listing for each quantity of the same item?

I note that on the site referenced that the quantity offered for an item is always 1. My idea is to offer multiple quantities of the same item but at differing prices for multiple orders of the same item.
