Thread: Wedgwood & Co pottery question

If you look at the other patterns produced by Enoch Wedgwood, none of them are anything like this bowl. Is it possible that some undecorated items were sold to another firm [or even an individual] and they decorated them in the style of Clarice Cliff?

The way to get a definite answer could be to send some photos to the Wedgwood Museum as it says on their contact page that they will help with identification of items. Their email is archives@wedgwoodmuseum.com.

I've had another trawl through all the images of Wedgwood & Co I could find, especially from the Deco period and see what you mean. Even their Deco designs were scenic or floral, I didn't find any other with an abstract pattern. Another thing I noticed. Their Deco designs such as "Utopia", with large blocks of pale blue similar to that on the bowl are always very evenly applied. On the bowl the colour is patchy, with brush strokes clearly visible on all large areas of colour.

I think you may well be correct, the pieces I have were sold undecorated and finished elsewhere but to a lower standard.

Incidentally, there has been some discussion on the Glass Message Board in the past about the power Buyers from large stores had during the inter-war period. Sales were hard to come by and if a Buyer wanted pieces from several glass sets put together to make something unique to their store, they were likely to get what they wanted. The same might have applied to pottery, the Buyer insisting on blanks, to be decorated somewhere else with designs that they thought would sell in their store.

Many thanks for your insights, if you're right it would seem I will be very lucky to find even another cup to replace the broken one and even less likely to find a milk jug or tea-pot.

    Thank you so much.

How typical of that awful site that despite having a Saved Search littered with key words from the listing title, its search STILL doesn't show me this item.

Something I will make clear to the seller as soon as I get their email address and how someone HERE was kind enough to tell me about it.
