Twitter asking for mobile phone number when posting to Twitter from eBid

When I list an item on eBid I usually share the post via eBid to facebook, twitter and pinterest. Today when I clicked the link, Twitter wanted to verify that I wasn't a robot, well and good, I went through that, but then asked me for my mobile so that Twitter could text me a code to verify who I was.

I did not proceed, and will no longer be posting my items to Twitter.

All this is happening via the eBid link to Twitter.

Does anyone else have any reservations about giving mobile phone numbers to Twitter? Can eBid have an arrangement with Twitter to by pass this?

I consequently received this email from Twitter and I am hoping that eBid is based at West Midlands, because I am not.

eBid are in Surrey, I would email them and let them know about this as they don't seem to visit the forums very often these days. Looks like there is some kind of hack going on.
