Default Another nail in the Post Office coffin :(

Barclay card and Post Office cards will not be accepted for cash withdrawals in post offices from January.

Speaking to the girl at our local PO this morning and they are all obviously worried that other banks will follow suit.

Everyone is going to be encouraged to open bank accounts and use ATMs.

Wow!....Are these new things. What will I do with my stash under the mattress?

Seriously, I have only known one person who only had a post office card

Part of email received from bank today:

In the last six months you may have used the Post Office to withdraw cash from your Barclays account. From January 2020 we'll be removing this service from the Post Office, which means you won't be able to withdraw cash over the counter. It's never good news when a service you use is being withdrawn, but we really hope the alternatives below will give you access to cash when you need it. No other services at the Post Office will be affected by this change, so you'll still be able to pay in cash, cheques and check your balance.

That obviously applies to Barclays only, but I was told that they will no longer accept PO card for cash withdrawal.
At least two of my friends have PO bank accounts and withdraw their pension using that card.

That is worrying if other banks are going to follow as ATM's are closing down all over the place according to 'Which?', leaving many people in rural areas without a means to get cash.

I had no trouble reading and certainly don't subscribe to FT

Yes, they will let you use at the moment - but for how long. Can't imagine they won't follow suit....

Savers made 15 MILLION cash withdrawals from the Post Office in one year - so why IS the bank banning them from January?

As you'd expect, quite a backlash to Barclays.

    To bring this thread up-to-date:

Barclays U-turn on cash access in post offices.

Barclays has reversed its decision to prevent customers withdrawing money from the Post Office network.

It prompted fury when it announced its debit card holders could deposit money but not withdraw cash from a post office counter from January.

Cancelling that plan, the bank said it recognised the network was "valued by many communities in the UK".

It had been the only one of 28 banks and building societies not to fully sign up to a Post Office agreement.
