Thanks for that. I'll check if I still have an account with them.

Ancestry also usually run a free period around Rememberance Sunday but I haven't seen that announced as yet.

Ancestry have just announced that Commonwealth records on fold3.com which is their military extra site (which you have to join separately)
"Access to the records in the featured collections will start on 10 November and be free until 13 November, 2017 at 23:59 BST. To view these records you will need to register for free with Fold3.com with your email address. We will then send you a username and password to access the records. After the free access period ends, you will only be able to view the records in the featured collections using an Ancestry.co.uk paid All Access membership."

While we are talking about family history - There are some amazing online resources which are free and slightly more obscure. I recently found interesting stuff in the State Library of Victoria, Australia

    https://www.slv.vic.gov.au/

lots of periodicals & newpapers - even some UK publications.

I found this by googling an ancestor's name - that is my top tip for finding out more. I googled my husband's gt grandfather (well, one of them) and found his motorcycle registration! I googled his grandfather and found out something he never knew - that the U-boat he beat off when it was attacking tankers during WWI was not sunk. I even found a photo of the u-boat Captain!

And don't forget FreeBMD and it's associated sites.

You may even find that I transcribed one of your ancestors.

Someone else who had too much time on their hands.

Though I did enjoy it, particular the old and hard to decipher records.

Well I didn't have that as an excuse. I did it to give something back for what the site gave me. I think I gave more than I took.

Though as my paternal ancestry is Scottish it was less use on that side of the family.
