I can if I wish open a store for free, am a little baffled as to the advantage of doing so though. If someone is interested in something surely they just search for it and item shows anyway. Is there any advantage?

If you are seller lifetime+ then you get five free stores so I think you would be crazy not to use them. I quite often browse people's stores from their signature links on the forums or go to the stores page and look in a particular category. For example if I spotted someone that has a stamp store I might be tempted to have a look but if they didn't then I probably wouldn't bother to trawl through their listings unless I was looking for a specific thing.
eBid also shows 'featured stores' on the stores page so you are missing out by not having one.

Thanks, will look into it as it sounds like it could be worthwhile after all.
It also allows you to group your items in the way you choose rather than doing it ebid's way.
