Default A taste of things to come?

Today I went to our local Sainsbury for my bi-weekly shop. One of the items on my list was an Iceberg lettuce. I was horrified to see that the only Iceberg lettuces available were from USA. Teresa May hasn't even finished her talks in Washington. So is this a taste of things to come? I hope not.

Don't feel bad, our lettuce probably comes from Mexico if ours is being shipped to you - that's where we get the majority of our meat from. Kinda "funny" that the requirement for grocers to state the country of origin on the meat label was dropped about a year ago. Cactus fed beef??? Not tasty at all!!

So stores have to buy them from where they can to provide the produce the customer (like you) demands. So you should thank the store and not berate it.

Of course... the facts will not serve the agenda you were pursuing.

I am wondering when we will be able to by locally produced bananas

There is a grower in Gosport but I doubt his greenhouse has enough room to feed the whole of the UK...so I have mine imported and pick them up from any supermarket...brilliant!

Much more interesting to go to Sainsbury's website, where "Iceberg" is listed twice. The first (and cheaper) reads :

"Grown in Germany, Northern Ireland, Spain, United Kingdom, USA". The second simply says that it is packaged in the UK (a little like our cars). In other words, it may come from anywhere - they do not really worry as an Iceberg Lettuce is...an Iceberg Lettuce!

The interesting thing, of course, is that Messrs Sainsbury seems totally unaware that N.I. is part of the UK. With such geographical aplomb, goodness knows where they think the USA is!

    I smiled over this one!

Back in the 1970's a relative visited the U.S., spending most of his time in Texas. Before he went he asked if there was anything I'd like him to get for me. I suggested something in tooled leather;it seemed appropriate.

I still have the item and am examining it now as I write. It's a very nice wallet and still in use (more frequently now!). Inside is stamped the legend: "Sandalwood Cowhide - Brazil."

The Iceberg Lettuce is a Northern U.S. variety in origin so It's hardly surprising that many are exported. It favours colder climates for cultivation (hence the name).

That's a little surprising. The ones in Sainsburys usually come from Spain

Just goes to show, with enough chemicals you can grow anything, anywhere.

The use of chemicals is an American speciality.
