Yes they are vermin of the highest order, & the stupid thing about their introduction was/is, that they were never able to do the intended job (of riding the sugar cane beetle) because they can't climb!
They have no natural predators here & ATM have nearly taken over Kakadu park in the Northern Territory along with a large part of the rest of the country.
I nearly lost a dog once when he grabbed one & got squirted in the mouth with the poison.
Fortunately I was nearby & able to flush his mouth out in time!
When we were young tear-aways, we used to go out especially at night, to run them over with our cars - great fun!
We figured we were doing the place a big service!
Cane toads are reason in large part to the loss of many native animal types. (including other frogs)
Needless to say I hate them with a passion!
The twit responsible for their introduction should have been pilloried
Here's the size they can attain (you can see the poison sacks just behind the eyes)
Just placed an order with a north Qld orchid nursery for some plants I've been after for some time, & am looking forward to them arriving.
Will show them here as they flower.
One in particular - Cattleya rex - I can only get as seedlings in a flask, so these babies will take some years to reach flowering stage (should they survive)
This plant is native to Colombia & Peru & has been very difficult to get here for years - hence my joy at being able to get it at all - even if it is in a flask.
In the meantime, here's a net photo of what they look like.
Very nice and I wish I had more time to devote to my orchids. The ones I have seem to thrive on neglect
I'm with you, meebo. Old surely has wonderful plants....and the new orchid will be gorgeous, no doubt. I have one white orchid I received as a gift a few years ago.....it has survived, and bloomed when I got it, and has bloomed once since. Now there are just the leaves. I keep it in the living room, which is the only room we generally heat. Sits by the window, and I give it some water or cold tea every few weeks. I know next to nothing about how to treat it, except not to water it too much.
Ta-Ta for now!
