Beautiful! Love how you used a dark background to make the details pop! Coconut, huh??
Hiya everybody Here we go again - yet another first time orchid bloomer for me
Bulbophyllum sikkimense - a native species of Sikkim in the far north east of India & close to the China, Bhutan & Nepal borders. Flower is about thumbnail size.
No scent to speak of, but if pressed, I imagined a very very slight hint of "almost" unpleasant spice?
Probably just as well, as most of the Bulbo. family are pollinated by flies or ants & other "dead meat" eating insects & their perfume can be of rotten meat - Yuk
I love this family of orchids - for their oddity & unusual blooms, not the scent however Enjoy!
gorgeous
Lovely little blooms!! With their red stripes, they SHOULD smell like a peppermint candy!! They probably would if it weren't for those darn "dead meat" eating insects & their perfume!!
Hi all - here's another one!
Have to apologize for the out of focus pix. I found it difficult to get this one properly for some reason?
Could it be due our public holiday celebrations yesterday - Anyhow!
This is Gongora galeata - a species native to Mexico with flowers to 2", which are presented upside down on pendulous spikes.
The scent is variously described as "akin to oranges" & "freshly laundered starched shirts" but to me, it is similar to burning foam (polystyrene) cups, OR those tiny sugar ants when crushed. Take your pick! Enjoy!
Still a little unsteady on your feet?? LOL!! Must mean you had a good time
I'll take "freshly laundered starched shirts" over burnt styro cups any day, but maybe that was "left over" from you celebrations too????
The highest blossom on the right looks like a humming bird sipping nectar from the flower - great photo skills!!
.......uh, I've never crushed sugar ants and then sniffed them. Hard up for entertainment in Australia, is we?? lol
