Thread: What's Goin' On - In My Garden!

So sorry to hear about the "Baked Orchids" I hope they are recovering.

I actually bought the 2 I have for starting seeds indoors before spring to keep the cats from digging in the dirt. They didn't look sturdy enough to stand up to any spring wind/rain storms that we might get here.

We have been having lots of rain and I think I finally figured out the "prediction system". I picked a day when the hourly precipitation was not predicted to be above 7% to burn all the debris from cleaning up the woods - what I ended up getting was about 7 minutes of rain EVERY hour! Not a bad deal though - didn't rain hard enough to put out the fire and the short shower every hour cooled and refreshed me - LOL!!

The days it hasn't rained, it has been so humid that the grass doesn't dry enough to mow until afternoon so it was so thick when I finally got to mow that it choked the mower down several times. NO rain predicted yesterday but the 3 times I got me gear together to go out and work, it started pouring!

And of course, it seems if it's raining within 50 miles of here I have no internet service, as it blocks the satellite signal so I haven't been getting much done inside or out.

We were supposed to have rain off and on all day today but I decided I HAD to go pull weeds - between rains if necessary - so I got up early to get started. It was overcast and a slight breeze was blowing - perfect , but I got interrupted by the chickens going crazy in the coops and got sidetracked from the weeding to remove another snake from the coops!! 4th one in 3 weeks! Grr...... Since then, the sun has been shining and it's too stinkin' hot to be out there any more. What IS up with this crazy weather? I'm off to take a nap.....

A warning to anyone from SE England who reads this thread. I found Fuchsia Gall Mite in Broadstairs, Kent yesterday. According to the RHS it has been on the south coast for a few years but it is the first time I've seen it in the area I work in, about a 7.5 mile radius from Ramsgate. It spreads very quickly, two weeks ago I saw it on one bush in a garden but didn't recognise it. I went back yesterday and it has spread to several others including an established climbing variety.

Oh my!! What has happened now with them? My satellite internet has been giving me fits due to the incessant (or so it seems!) rain. I replied the other day and seems it didn't get posted. I wondered why I hadn't seen any notifications for this post in a while.

I do hope that the little bit of green was enough to revive them!

Spotted this native orchid in a Gum tree (Eucalypt) about 20K's up the highway north/west of me.
Been past it a few times & one day hope to find it in flower. This time I took the camera!
I believe it to be a Cymbidium canaliculatum var sparkesii - but I'd need to see it in flower to be sure.
It's about 12 feet off the ground & probably the only reason its still there (too high for sticky fingers)

Old - I saw the pics of the damage How are they doing now?

Haven't you got a 12' ladder for your next trip up the highway?

1 - not good at all looks like I've certainly lost one of the Draculas & possibly one Phal. The rest are touch & go, but I have some hope still.
BTW - in the plant sauna, I now have Cacti, succulents & one Hoya. The door is open all day & closed at night. It will be interesting in summer though

2 - Yes, I have a ladder (the thought has crossed my mind) BUT with my luck, I'd get caught.
These things are protected & huge fines apply.
