I bought it in Kingston (Ont, not Surrey or Jamaica).

What we did notice was that EVERYONE was wearing one. Almost everyone wears them here.

I've never heard of it before but I do think it makes a nice 'new tradition' though and it does make sense.

Poppies without leaves - people remember them

Poppies with leaves either pointed to 11 or not - people remember them.

The worst thing is when 18/21 year olds have no idea what the poppy commemorates - as I found out in my local store 5 days ago. I'm obviously getting old because, if I had children I would ensure they knew the Poppies significance, especially at this time of year.

    Quite right Gill.
My children are all well informed about the significance of the poppy.
Parents, grandparents and great grandparents should be only too willing to educate their family and youngsters - sadly, looks like this isn't the case any more.

I once had to explain it to a German (in German, which was a challenge). When we lived in Lippstadt, on Remembrance Sunday we used the local parish church because nowhere else was big enough and a gentleman asked me what was going on as I was walking in before the service.

Exactly. As long as the way the poppy is displayed is not in itself disrespectful then display it however you wish.

Why is there always someone wanting to impose their ideas on others?

I'm beginning to wonder why I was taught/told of the true meaning of a poppy.

Unless you were in contact with those men in the picture madelaine you will never know why they wore the poppy the way they did.

Closing this thread before it gets out of hand.
